Karate Eligible for Canada Winter Games
Karate is finally eligible for inclusion in the Canada Winter Games.
The Canada Games Council has left it up to host province Prince Edward Island to choose between Karate, Table Tennis, Fencing and Target Shooting for inclusion in the 2023 Games.
Karate Canada President Craig Vokey said every effort will be made to get karate selected.
“The Canada Games look forward to continuing to build great partnerships among the governing bodies of the sports
on the program as we plan towards the 2023 Canada Games,” said CGC Chair Tom Quinn.
The CGC ran a sport selection process that included a core sport review following the
2015 Canada Winter Games and an assessment sport selection process to determine the final sport program for the 2023 Canada Winter Games.
The assessment process provides sports not previously on the Canada Games sport program the opportunity to be selected for the program through an objective evaluation.
President Craig Vokey and Treasurer Stéphane Rivest were re-elected to the Karate Canada board of directors during the 2016 Annual General Meeting held last October in Toronto.
Elected Vice-President was Derek J. Ryan of Newfoundland and Labrador. Karate BC President Norma Foster was elected member-at-large, replacing Paul Oliver of New Brunswick.
All were by acclamation.
Sensei Duncan MacLeod, 66, of Truro, NS, has been inducted into the Karate Nova Scotia Hall of Fame for his contribution to KNS. A deputy sheriff, he has been teaching karate for 40 years with the Truro Uechiryu Karate and Kickboxing Club.
MacLeod, an eighthdegree black belt, told the Cape Breton Post he had mixed feelings when notified about his induction.
He considered it a great honour, but as one who prefers to avoid the spotlight, he was also a bit uncomfortable.
“But once I sat down and wrapped my head around
it, I think it’s a good idea and there’s probably other people down the road that should be getting it also.”
