Three of Canada’s women performed very well at
the event with two of them earning podium placements.
Kate Campbell of New Brunswick and Haya Jumaa
from Ontario took bronze medals in the -55kg and -61kg kumite divisions while Kamille Desjardins from Quebec placed ninth in the -61 kg division.
Campbell, ranked 19th in the world going into the event, topped Warling (LUX) 5-0 in her irst match; Biondo (ITA) 1-0 in her second match; Attia (EGY) 2-0 in the third match;
eventually losing in hantei (decision) to the silver medallist Connell (SCO) in her fourth and inal match in the elimination bracket.
Once in repechage, Campbell beat eighth ranked Nakamura (JPN) 1-0 and Molnar (HUN) 3- 1 to clinch the bronze medal.
Kate only gave up two points during her entire six matches while scoring 13 on her opponents.
Jumaa went three rounds in the elimination bracket beating Casalboni (ITA) 4-0 and Aronen (FIN)
2-0 before losing to third ranked and the eventual silver medallist Coban (TUR) 1-4. In the repechage, Haya dominated through to the bronze medal round beating Steland (LUX) 2-0; Serogino (UKR) 4-0; and second ranked and 2015 Asian champion Xiaoyan Yin (CHN) 5-1.
