Haya’s +/- points during her six matches was a remarkable 21 points scored with only two points conceded.
Desjardin’s first match was a 1- 4 loss to the eventual gold medallists Prekovic (SRB) which drove her into the repechage where
she beat Shel (NED) 5-0; Sadovskaya (BLR) 1-0; eventually losing to Gataullina (RUS) 1-3 to place ninth.
Also of notable mention
is +84kg National Team member Daniel Gaysinsky who went four rounds defeating Honda (JPN) 8-0, Haziri (KOS) 3-0 and Carlsen (DEN) 7-0; finally losing to Ipek (TUR) 0-3 and walking away with a +/- score ratio of 18 points scored and three points conceded.
In women’s kata, Hana Furumoto-Deshaies of Quebec won her first two matches before losing to Spanish opponent Silvana Celma Bodington.
As a backdrop to these achievements was the launch of the new WKF rule set.
Most notable among the changes is the introduction of the “senshu” rule that
is used to determine the winner in the case of a tie in points and the end of match time.
In such cases, the winner will be the competitor that has the “first unopposed score advantage”.
This rule change affects match tactics and intensity as there is now significant tactical advantage given to the competitor that scores first in the match as well as a significant gap to close for the athlete who did not achieve senshu in the match.
This athlete effectively must make up the initial point
