Reflection 2:

One of the biggest problems the youth of our generation faces is the inability to

communicate. Youths face different types of problems and may not convey what is thought or

felt, majority of the time. The miscommunication individuals suffer can present negative

feelings, such as being an outsider and it isolates us from others. Society also has a tremendous

effect in this matter. The majority of individuals in our society have a pre-determined definition

of “normal”, that dictates everyone should have a complete control of their life and have a firm

grasp on their problems. With this false definition of “normal”, we tend to resist the notion of

seeking help and rather try to bottle up our emotions.

Finding ourselves unable to completely bottle up our emotions, then after a while we

become reactive, usually venting out all our frustrations and anger in ways which can harm

oneself or people close to us both emotionally and physically. If we do gather the courage to talk

to someone about it, we are often misunderstood and it leads us to misguided conclusions about

our mental state. This isolation and sense of helplessness can also lead a person into melancholia.

The younger generations are more vulnerable to this because they are not mentally matured

enough to take on this level of stress. The emotional strain caused by this can change a person

both on an emotional and ethical level. They may start to shut themselves off from others and

               become more introverted.

All these aspects are incorporated in my poem, “Falling”. The individual mentioned in

the poem is unable to convey his problems and when he does try, he is looked down upon

because the rest of society thinks he is crazy. Because of the pressure, he has a fragmented mind
