set for noon the next day. I even found a little about it in one of Uncle Trent’s journals.
Uncle Trent was good at writing things down. Sometimes he wrote in a journal and
sometimes on his calendar. Like I said, I heard most of the story from Joe Simmons who said
he got it direct from Seth Watkins. I also read about it in Uncle Trent’s Journal.
“We got back from Alamosa and we felt lucky to get home at all. Seth and me went
over there to spree a little. We happened to get involved with an ornery young man who wanted
to race his horse against mine, even though I didn’t want to run him. His name is Emilio
Sanchez and he got under my skin there for a while but we got out without a scratch.”
Later in the same journal, I found a little more interesting information:
“I went lookin’ for Wire when he didn’t come to feed this morning.”
He continued on,
“I hope nothin’ has happened to that little horse. I might have to ride over to
see if that Sanchez feller knows anything about it.”
Further down in the same journal there was even more about the horse named Wire.
“Wire has been missin’ for over a week and I’m going to ride over to Alamosa and see
that señorita and while I’m at it, I’m going to see if anyone knows anything about my horse.”
More on the story continued:
“I’m convinced that someone stole Wire. I ain’t found any bones or a carcass. I
couldn’t find nothin’ out in Alamosa. Nobody would talk to me. I can’t even find out about that
girl. Them folks is stickin’ together.”
And again, mention of the señorita.
“I feel like she saved my life, so I’d like to get to know her better. ‘Sides, she looks
real good.”
