“Ride heem!” shouted one of the onlookers. There was an uproar from the crowd.
Before Tamale had left the ground for the third time, Emilio was hugging the red horse
around the neck and barely hanging on. This time when the young horse hit the earth, Emilio
landed beside the front feet of a red horse and his expression was one of vengeance. Tamale
stood over Sanchez with his teeth bared, his ears pinned back and not giving the downed man
any slack.
“EEE! .., Get heem away from me!” Emilio whimpered.
When the two men rode from town, they went unmolested. He never did take “Bandito”
away from Emilio but Uncle Trent rode him around the town square and spun him both ways in
front of a cheering crowd. Cheering the loudest was a young pretty señorita.
Seth said that Uncle Trent mentioned wanting to go see her once in a while but thought
they would just bring a lot of trouble with the local folks. Although most of them spoke
English and got along with their white neighbors, they didn’t seem to want the blood to mix.
Uncle Trent used to go see her every so often though, so I heard. From all I can gather
the two became quite a pair. I looked around the cabin for a picture of them or pictures of her
but, I never found any pictures at all. I couldn’t even find out for sure what her name was.
Joe Simmons tells that one time Uncle Trent went over to San Luis, Colorado and ran
into Emilio Sanchez for the second time. He says they fought and Uncle Trent whipped
Sanchez pretty bad. All of this because the pretty señorita took a shine to Uncle Trent.
