THE CONSTITUTION OF INDIA
PREAMBLE
We, the people of India, having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a 1[Sovereign Socialist Secular Democratic Republic] and to secure to all its citizens:
Justice, social, economic and political;
Liberty of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship;
Equality of status and of opportunity;
and to promote among them all
Fraternity assuring the dignity of the individual and the 2[unity and integrity of the Nation];
In our constituent assembly this twenty-sixth day of November, 1949, do hereby adopt, enact and give to ourselves this Constitution.
COMMENTS
The words “WE THE PEOPLE OF INDIA” in Preamble show that in India, the People are supreme. (Usha Bharti v State of U.P., AIR 2014 SC 1686 : (2014)7 SCC 663).
Preamble is an integral part of the Constitution. (S.R. Bommai v Union of India, AIR 1994 SC 1918 : (1994)3 SCC 1).
Complete Justice - social, economic and political - is what our Constitution promises to each and every citizen - Nandini Sundar v State of Chhattisgarh, AIR 2011 SC 2839 : (2011)7 SCC 547).
Constitution of India incorporates the concept of federation. (Kuldip Nayar v Union of India, AIR 2006 SC 3127 : (2006)7 SCC 1).
Equality doctrine ingrained in Article 14 is essence of democracy, is the basic structure of the Constitution. (M. Nagaraj and Others v Union of India and Others, AIR 2007 SC 71 : (2006)8 SCC 212).
Rule of law is the basic feature of the Constitution. (Renu v District and Sessions Judge, Tis Hazari, AIR 2014 SC 2175 : 2014 AIR SCW 1303 ; K.T. Plantation Private Limited v State of Karnataka, AIR 2011 SC 3430 : (2011)9 SCC 1).
