5-1. Performance Appraisal Process
Performance appraisals are generally conducted on an annual basis within 60 days following the employee’s anniversary date. Sales professionals and most management team members have their appraisals within 30 days following January 1st of each year. New employees may receive an introductory performance review within 90 – 180 days of employment, depending on the position. An appraisal may also be conducted in the event of a promotion or a significant change in duties or responsibilities.
The appraisal is intended to review the employee’s performance against stated objectives, assess development opportunities and to establish goals/objectives for the coming year. An employee’s career goals are also discussed. The formal process is not a substitute for performance management, which is a continuous and ongoing process.
To ensure that appraisal discussions are as productive and constructive as possible, employees are required to complete the employee self-appraisal. The employee self-appraisal is an invaluable portion of the process as it provides employees with the opportunity to appraise their own performance and share accomplishments and progress in a formal manner. The manager then utilizes the self-appraisal along with his or her own thoughts to craft a final review for discussion.
In advance of these discussions, Human Resources coordinates the process of finalizing the appraisal and makes salary recommendations based on approved salary guidelines. All appraisals and salary increases require Human Resources and one-over-one approval.
A comprehensive checklist is available on the Erbe Human Resources Portal, which describes the process and specific timelines for completion.
Common Review Date
Employees have common review dates as follows. These dates also coincide with any merit increases for which that employee may be eligible:
 Management & Sales employee appraisals are conducted in January of each year.
 Non-management exempt and all non-exempt employee appraisals are conducted in May
of each year.
The employee’s manager conducts the merit review and performance appraisal simultaneously.
