P. 220
In the sports of men's and women's golf as well as men's DI and DIII tennis and women's DI tennis, athletes will not be charged a season of
NJCAA eligibility for any participation in the fall 2019 or spring 2020 seasons. The sport of women's DIII tennis is charged with a season of
participation since its regular season and championship are both in the fall season.
Case 4
Fall Practice Season – Athletic Contact Limits
SITUATION:
During the 60 consecutive practice days in the fall, is 20 hours a week the limit for athletic contact? Do they have any restrictions?
ANSWER:
The 60 consecutive practice days in the fall are considered the in-season period and during the in-season period the NJCAA recommends that no
more than a maximum of 20 hours of athletic contact take place. To participate in practice, all student-athletes must be enrolled in at least one
course during the term and have a valid physical on file.
Case 5
Fall Practice Season – Wrestling Unattached
SITUATION:
During the fall 2020 practice season in wrestling, is it permissible for wrestlers to wrestle in meets as an unattached wrestler?
ANSWER:
It is not allowable for wrestlers to participate in events in the fall 2020 term as unattached.
Case 6
Participation Physical
SITUATION:
For the 2020-2021 academic year, do student-athletes have to get a new participation physical or is their old one still good since medical facilities
are so difficult to get into?
ANSWER:
In the NJCAA a participation physical is valid for a maximum of 13 months. Once outside of the 13-month period, the student-athlete is not
permitted to practice or compete in any manner until a new valid physical is on file with the member institution. The COVID-19 pandemic has not
changed this NJCAA requirement.
Case 7
Off-Campus Facilities
SITUATION:
Due to COVID-19, Community College-A is restricting access to their campus facilities. This includes not allowing their basketball teams to
condition with a coach during the fall practice season. Can Community College-A request to have an off-campus facility approved to hold athletic
practices considering the current pandemic?
ANSWER:
The NJCAA would not approve such a request. The college facility is closed either at the discretion of the college itself or a local requirement. The
NJCAA would not make an approval undermining either decision. During the fall 2020 practice season, the 60 consecutive day window is
identified as in-season. During the in-season period it is permissible to practice at a location of the institution’s discretion. No approval would be
required from the NJCAA National Office during these 60 consecutive days.
