ARNOLD PALMER PLAQUE
Walking back to the parking area, I stop at the Arnold Palmer Plaque at the 16th and pay tribute to my favourite player, Mr. Arnold Palmer. Interesting that his father was a golf professional/greenskeeper at Latrobe Country Club in Pennsylvania. What set Arnie above the others was his humble background, charisma, wearing his emotion on his sleeve and playing the game with passion. He instilled into golf the importance of dedication, reliability, loyalty, and tenacity. I was fortunate enough to meet my idol during his playing days.
UNIQUE EXPERIENCE
I gather my backpack to make the final ascent to the Patron Parking. Passing the souvenir vendors and food and beverage outlets closing for the evening, the excitement is in the air of anticipation of tomorrow’s opening round. A good place, no cell phone, no distractions, just me and Augusta National, I take a deep breath and look around one final time. The palms sway in the wind, the sun descends in the distance, the Heron soars above, and for some mysterious reason the pain in my lower back is gone.
A GOLF SUPERINTENDENT’S LEGACY
I am proud of my contributions and accomplishments to the game of golf and thankful for my experiences thus far.
I am a keeper and steward of the land, leading a team, and painting an aesthetically pleasing picture for all to enjoy. The mystic bond of the men and women whose sole inner being is to nurture and care for a living plant.
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic it was the Golf Course Superintendent who stood firm, safeguarding our hollow grounds. We were called upon to collaborate with ownership and rise to the task before them. A new world awaits us, the challenges won’t stop. The reluctant heroes behind the scenes will rise with the morning sun. GM
