The late John Bladon (Chimera Group/Turf Prophit) was honoured with the John B. Steel Distinguished Service Award for his outstanding contributions to the advancement in the profession of golf course Superintendents. John’s influence in the development of Turf Prophit, a proprietary cost analysis software specifically tailored to the unique needs of golf course management, is utilized by many golf course Superintendents not only in Canada, but worldwide. This is only one example of many lasting effects John will have on the industry.
Eric Ruhs (Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club) was awarded the CGSA/ENVU Superintendent of the Year Award. Eric has dedicated his career to Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club; a career that has him entering his 41st season at the property (38th as golf course superintendent). This prestigious award includes a $5000 ENVU plant protection package and a trip for two to attend an ENVU educational opportunity with golf.
Nick Daley (Capilano Golf & Country Club) was presented the CGSA/ Toro Assistant Superintendent of the Year Award. Nick is a testament the next generation of industry leaders. Through his award, Nick will be given an opportunity to participate in the Toro Experience for Assistant Superintendents. This experience includes an all expense paid trip to Toro’s World Headquarters located in Bloomington, MN, to partake in their exclusive, annual event of educational sessions, interactive tours, and networking.
The CGSA/Rainbird Environmental Achievement Award was awarded to Garry Haynes, MS, AGS (Play Golf Calgary). Garry’s team showed amazing innovation thinking completely outside the box to construct a fully self sustainable ‘Off the Grid’ maintenance facility at Serenity Golf Club where there is no connection to power, city water, or sanitary sewer. Garry also published an article in GreenMaster (Winter 2022 edition) that details the process they used to develop an environmentally friendly maintenance shop.
Chris Bozanin (Beacon Hall Golf Club) was presented the CGSA/Foley Company Equipment Technician of the Year Award. As we all know, behind the scenes of every golf course is a great equipment technician! They do not always get the recognition they deserve, but hands down are vital to everyone’s success.
Lastly, Keith Lyall (Sun Peaks Resort Golf Course) was awarded CGSA/ Toro Gord Witteveen Article of the Year Award for his article “Steps to an EffectiveManagementSystem”intheWinter2023editionofGreenMaster. Keith’s article was a great read as it discussed a topic quite different compared to what you traditionally read in this publication. Congratulations to all the winners! It was fantastic to see them honoured in front of a packed room.
