Who is wisely convening my friends in this book,
And in sweet mixture, but not in sad confusion,
Calling together, in the name of Bacchus and his religion,
Those who cherished a love under his shelter?
Who can gather round himself, with no dispute,
The writer, the restaurateur, the magistrate,
The translator, he of noble lineage, the beloved one,
The potter, the cellarman and the military man?
The one who turns fleetness into eternity
And asleep under the bright red sealing wax, holds in store
Heaps of endless loves up to happiness.
Wine, it is wine that with charm and spell
Makes us heirs to his divine birth.
What magical being could it be but wine?
