First Grade News — Mrs. Brownley
The Cincinnati Zoo came to visit First Grade and talked about how animals move. We first played a game where we pretended to be squirrels gathering and hiding nuts. After we thought about why squirrels need to move quickly, we got to see a Brazilian Rainbow Boa named Prism. We learned about the muscles that a boa constrictor uses to move and catch its prey. Next we got to observe a cage filled with hissing cockroaches from Madagascar. We learned that they use the prickly hairs on their feet to help them stick as they climb up smooth surfaces.
As a part of our Science unit on matter, we have been exploring solids, liquids, and gases. We worked together in groups to build a boat using aluminum foil. We then tested how well our boat would float. Next we counted how many cubes we could add still keep the boat floating. We were surprised by how many cubes we could add!
