Cultural Relevance

CACE Visionary Leadership A-9: Examine and respond to equity issues
related to race, diversity, and access, using inclusive practices:

After committing to opening a Thomas Edison Charter Academy (TECA) school
library, I began to look through a lens of equity in order to provide a school-wide
collection of books that meet the needs of our diverse population of TK-8
students.

CACE Instructional Leadership B-7: Types of evidence need to support making evidence-based decisions
regarding instructional improvement, including changes in practice:

I investigated our demographics data. The TECA student population reflects our
increasingly diverse society, including children from a wide spectrum of social,
cultural, and economic backgrounds.

9% of TECA students are Black or African American
1% of TECA students are American Indian or Alaska Native
1% of TECA students are Asian
1% of TECA students are Filipino
83% of TECA students are Hispanic or Latino
2% of TECA students are Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander
2% of TECA students are White
1% of TECA students are Two or More Races
82% of TECA students are Socioeconomically Disadvantaged
36% of TECA students are English Language Learners
2% of TECA students have Disabilities
2% of TECA students are in Foster Homes
