Removing Barriers
CACE Instructional Leadership B-29: Understand how to use the
influence and power inherent in a leadership position to enhance
the educational program, promote learning for all student groups,
and make fair and appropriate decisions:
Culturally Responsive Library Walk
I will use the “Culturally Responsive Library Walk”, an observation and planning
document, developed by Sandra Hughes-Hassell. It will be a collaborative tool
for me, as an educational leader, to use with the librarian and the teachers. The
goal of the Library Walk is to discover areas of improvement and develop a plan
to maintain a culturally diverse library collection.
Evaluating Multicultural Literature
Another resource I will refer to is an article by, Dr. Denise E. Agosto, Director of
the Center for the Study of Libraries, Information and Society, that explains that
all high quality multicultural literature must share these five characteristics:
accuracy, expertise, respect, purpose, and quality.
Considering LGBT Themes in Children’s Books
I registered with American Library Association’s Social Responsibilities Round
Table’s Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Task Force for librarians. This
resource will provide me with guidelines to evaluate LGBT themes in children’s
literature.
