Red. At his request, I rebuilt the engine with Forged
TRW pistons, a performance Crane cam, headers, and
a nitrous oxide system. Eventually I bought the car and
have been upgrading and driving it ever since. Another
car was a 1968 Pontiac GTO that was my friend’s mom’s
original car. I returned the car to its muscle car status
after bringing it to my home on the Outer Banks of North
Carolina for a long R+R session. It is now back in Franklin
Square at a mutual friend’s house. I have a 1967 Chevy
ll that I’ve built a supercharged 427 Small block Chevy
(4.125” bore x 4” stroke) for and reconfigured most of
the car except the body. A 1931 Plymouth Convertible
is parked next to it who’s frame I’d reinforced. I bought
a 4x8 sheet of ten-gauge steel, made templates of
the original frames contours and cut the sheet with a
plasma cutter before encapsulating the original frame
in fresh metal with a MIG welder. I had first built it for
a supercharged 540 Chevy engine but am currently
building a 1958 Chrysler Hemi for it in order to keep it
all Mopar. These are the cars that turn back the hands
of time for me every time I turn the key and turn off the
radio. It happens as they settle into their chaotic idle that
always sounds to me like the opening drum riff of Van
Halen’s “Hot for Teacher”.
An oral surgeon friend in Suffolk County has a sign in her
private office that says ”God put me here to accomplish
a certain number of tasks. Right now, I am so far
behind that I can never die.” Don’t we all wish that were
true? Meanwhile I’ll be watching the Weather Channel
for hurricanes and tropical storms to make waves and
building and driving hot rods whenever I have time. Thank
