Objectives:
The purpose of this focus area is to reduce asthma triggers from environmental factors that cause
exacerbations. Environmental triggers include a variety of indoor and outdoor allergens that are
both naturally occurring such as pollen and dust as well as human-made such as smoke, chemical
fumes, and environmental toxins.
The specific focus area measures that have been identified for reducing environmental triggers
are:
• Decrease the number of youth who smoke.
• Decrease exposure to secondhand smoke.
• Increase awareness indoor asthma triggers in the home.
• Increase awareness of environmental asthma triggers.
• Measure air quality in schools.
Focus area one objective measures are included in Appendix B.

The strategies included below have been identified as ways to reduce environmental triggers
to reduce the burden of asthma in Indiana. They are organized by Policies that Support Healthy
Communities, Education Strategies and Awareness Strategies.
