UN DAY 2016
UN Day is celebrated worldwide on October 24th. AKA
commemorates this milestone through advocacy and
education about the lifesaving work of the United Nations.
The UN has been fighting poverty for 70 years, and adopted
an ambitious goal in 2015 of eradicating extreme hunger and
poverty around the world by 2030. Is this goal achievable?
Yes. Mankind is smarter, wiser, and more resourceful than any other creature living on the
earth. The primary obstacle to achieving this goal will not be technical know-how, but political
interference. Improving the well-being and lives of all mankind has been the mission of Alpha
Kappa Alpha since inception. Through our global partnership with United Nations
Association and our commitment to Launching New Dimensions of Service, AKA will
influence this ongoing dialogue.
What is to be achieved? By 2030, men, women and children of all ages living in poverty
(currently measured as people living on less than $1.25 a day) will be reduced by at least ½
through a measured approach and industrial development cooperation. The Sustainable Goals
also focus on promoting health, ending violence and ensuring equality for all. We thank the
16 UN peacekeeping operations around the world living and working in war and volatile
regions of the globe. There are no issues more important for the sustainability of all mankind
than issues of poverty, inequality and protection of the planet. We can end extreme poverty
and hunger over the next 15 years and ensure that all human beings can fulfill their potential
in dignity and equality and in a healthy environment. These are lofty goals but ensuring that
no man, woman or child dies, due to a lack of food and water, is a challenge mankind can
advance.
