As they say, a picture is “worth a thousand words.” The following chart
clearly shows that interest rates can remain low for extended periods.
However, it's probably fair to say that interest rates will someday begin to
increase. This chart illustrates that there have been periods of higher
interest rates.
Many people do not understand that bond prices and interest rates move in
opposite directions. With the potential for rising interest rates in the future,
hedging strategies, such as inverse (move in the opposite direction of
current interest rate movement), interest related investment vehicles can
help protect or capitalize in cases of extreme rising rates, as shown during
the ‘80s on the previous chart. This is not about timing rising interest rates;
it is about the awareness of a tool that can be considered at the appropriate
time with the assistance of a financial professional.
