HOW GOD PROTECTED HIS CHOSEN PEOPLE AND LED THEM INTO THE PROMISED LAND
I. THE DEPARTURE OF THE ISRAELITES FROM EGYPT

For some time after Joseph's death, the Israelites, :•d as the descendants of Jacob were called, continued to lions ID enjoy freedom and prosperity in Egypt. While the d  E  scendants of Lot and Esau were leading a nomadic
life in the immediate neighborhood of Chanaan, Jacob's descendants were living in peace and growing
in power and wealth in Egypt. But  nally a new Pharao ascended the throne, "who knew not Joseph."
Then everything was changed. The lot of the Israel-
ites became a very hard one. They were reduced to
slavery, and were forced to make bricks for Pharao. From being a happy people, they became sad and weary in the service of the Egyptians.
There were several causes which brought about this Cau  of Iba
change in their conditions. The Pharaos were jealous change of the power and wealth of the Israelites. They feared
that the Israelites might be friendly to the Semitic
