keep down the number of those who could bear arms in battle, Pharao ordered that every Jewish boy should be killed as soon as he was born.
This o er of Pharao was not always obeyed. Many M little boys were saved, and among them was one called sa Moses. For three months the mother of Moses con cealed him at home, but, fearing that he might be discovered, she made for him a wicker basket, and covered it with tar. She placed the baby in the basket
and set it down among the bulrushes that grew close to the banks of the Nile River. Then she stole away, praying God to take care of her little boy.
Miriam, the sister of Moses, stood afar o , watch ing to see what would happen to her little brother. Now, just at that time the daughter of Pharao, with her maids, approached to bathe in the river. When Pharao's daughter saw the basket, she ordered one of her maids to bring it to her. When she uncovered it, she found the poor little crying babe.
"This is one of the babes of the Hebrews," she said. Miriam, at a distance, trembled for the safety of her brother. But when she saw that the princess looked lovingly at the babe, she ran up to her. ''Shall I go and call a Hebrew woman to nurse the babe1" she asked. The princess replied, "Go." Miriam brought her mother. The princess, not knowing the woman, placed Moses in his own mother's care, and promised to pay her for her services to the child.
When Moses was older, the princess took him to her Moses Is
