90 GOD'S CHOSEN PEOPLE ENTER THE PROMISED LAND
him to give the Israelites a period of rest in the form of three days' journey into the wilderness, that they might o er sacri ce to their God. Pharao would not listen to such a request. Why should slaves be idle three days from their work1 Pharao feared the Israelites, and was not anxious to preserve their health and strength. He sent Moses and Aaron away, and told them never to annoy him again.
As a result of this visit, Pharao commanded the overseers to place new burdens upon the shoulders of Israelites. They were now forced to gather the straw which was necessary to hold the clay together in the form of bricks. Much time was lost in gathering the straw, and the Israelites were not able to make so many bricks as when the straw was supplied to them.
the Israelites around them and told them how God had apĀ­ pointed them to be their leadĀ­ ers. They told the people of the wonderful things which had happened on Mount Horeb, and showed them the signs which God had given them to prove their mission. The Jews believed Moses and Aaron and accepted them as their leaders. They were ready to follow them out of the land of Egypt into the Promised Land.
