with oil and wine, were o ered; and bloody, in which bullocks, lambs, goats, turtledoves or pigeons, all with out blemish, were slain. The oblations of our had to be mixed with salt, oil and frankincense. The priest burnt a portion of these on the altar and retained the rest for his own use. At the same time an o ering of wine was poured out at the foot of the altar.
The bloody sacri ces were of four kinds: holocausts, in which the entire victim was consumed by re, an act of adoration to acknowledge God's supreme do minion; peace o erings, made as acts of thanksgiving or petition; sin o erings, for venial sins; and expia tory or trespass o erings, to make satisfaction for grievous sins or restitution for injuries done. In these last three, only the fat and entrails of the victim were burnt. The right shoulder and breast, which the priest waved before the Lord, were reserved for himself. The remainder of the animal was restored to the o erer.
R r Every morning and evening the priests were obliged to o er a holocaust of a lamb for all the people. In cense also was o ered every day on the golden altar of incense. On the Sabbath, or day of rest, two victims were o ered at the sacri ces. On the monthly feast celebrated at the New Moon, many victims were slain, and the feast was announced by the blowing of silver trumpets. The New Moon of the Seventh Month was called the Feast of Trumpets, at which a still larger number of victims were sacri ced. Every seventh year was called the Sabbatical Year, and during it the
