same manner as he had sprinkled the blood of the calf. He laid his hands upon the head of the second goat, confessed the sins of the people over it, and then ordered it to be led out into the wilderness. From this, we get the word scapegoat.
After this ceremony, the high priest washed and vested in his usualrobes. He then o ered two rams to adore God, the Owner of all things. One of these he o ered for himself, and the other for the people.
The rst of these special days in the calendar of the The Israelites was the Feast of the Pasch, or Passover, also called Azymes (unleavened bread). It was cele- h brated on the fourteenth day of the rst month, called Nisan (March-April). In the evening of this day the Israelites ate the Paschal lamb in their tents. They roasted the lamb with xed rites and ceremonies, and
ate it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs, stand ing, dressed in their traveling clothes, with traveling staves in their hands. The celebration lasted for eight days but work was forbidden only on the rst and the last day of the ceremonies. This feast was appointed by God to recall to the Israelites the night when He protected them from the destroying angel and led them out of Egypt.
