Josue next marched against Hai, a city northwest of Jericho. As soon as the people of this town saw his forces, they rushed upon them and put the Israelites to rout. God revealed to Josue that the cause of the defeat was the disobedience of one of his men: They cast lots to discover the guilty man. It was found to be Achan, who had retained some of the plunder of Jericho for himself, after God had commanded that all should be given to the Tabernacle. Achan was punished with death. God then said to Josue, "Fear not, nor be dismayed; behold I have delivered into thy hand the king of Hai.''
