152 GOD'S CHOSEN PEOPLE ENTER THE PROMISED LAND
Josue, they decided to punish it. Josue hastened by night to its assistance, and fell upon the enemy's camp. There was a great slaughter, the Lord also killing many with large hailstones. As Josue feared nightfall would end the battle before complete victory, with great con dence in God, he cried out, "Move not, 0
sun, toward Gabaon, nor thou, 0 moon, toward the valley of Ajalon.'' God answered his prayer and the sun and moon stood still till Josue won the victory. The ve kings took refuge in a cave and Josue slew them. By this and other victories he gained control of the southern half of Chanaan.
Third The cities in the north of Chanaan likewise united campaign their forces against Josue. The king of Asor was their leader. But God was with Josue, who marched against their armies and defeated them. He followed the armies until they were nearly all destroyed. Then
he returned and took their cities for the Israelites.
