and saw David standing at the mouth of the cave, holdĀ ing up the piece which he had cut from his garment. Seeing this, Saul's heart was troubled. He knew that David could have killed him had he wished and
for a while he ceased to hate him. But David did not trust the king. He continued to lead a wandering life, accompanied by his faithful band of soldiers.
Saul soon forgot how David had spared his life and Dav set out once more to pursue him. This time he sought ula him in the desert of Ziph. One night David and his nd men came into the camp of Saul when all were asleep. me Nas on guard to challenge them and David took Saul's spear and a cup of water which was at
the king's side. Going o some distance from the
camp, David called to Abner, Saul's general, and said, "Why hast thou not guarded the lord, thy king?
