Suddenly Saul took a spear and cast it at David, hop­ ing to nail him against the wall. But David stepped aside and escaped.
After this, Saul could not bear to have David in his presence. He feared him because he knew that the Lord was with him. So he gave him a. thousand men and sent him on an expedition against the Philistines, hoping that he might be slain. He told him that if he brought back proof that he had killed a hundred men, he would give him his daughter Merob in marriage.
Now, David loved Michol, the younger daughter of Saul, but he accepted the condition of the king. Going forth, he killed two hundred Philistines. Meanwhile the king had given Merob in marriage to another. When David returned, Saul o ered him Michol in­ stead. David was much pleased at this, for Michol and he loved each other dearly. They were married amid
the rejoicing of the people. Now that David was his son-in-law, Saul's hatred of him grew more and more. He even told Jonathan and his servants of his desire to get rid of David, and Jonathan secretly warned his friend to  ee.
Again David went out and fought against the Philis­ tines and again he was victorious. He defeated them with great slaughter and they  ed from his army. He returned to Saul and once more the king tried to kill him with a spear. But David escaped in the darkness of the night, and went to his own house.
