184 GOD'S CHOSEN PEOPLE UNDER KINGS
David took his sling and whirled a stone at Goliath. The stone struck the giant in the forehead and he fell to the ground stunned. David ran up, took Goliath's sword, and cut o his head. The rest of the Philistines
ed. The Israelites pursued them and killed many of them.
When the rest of the soldiers returned from the purĀ suit of the Philistines, the people sang the praises of David. He was the nation's hero. Everywhere could be heard the cry, "Saul has killed his thousands but David his tens of thousands.'' This caused Saul to become very jealous of David.
David
=athan and sought in every way to do the will of God. He was
Jonathan, the son of Saul, was a noble young prince
very dear to his father.
David and Jonathan became great friends. Day by
day they lived together in the palace and grew to love each other very dearly. The soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved David as his very self.
They swore that they would always be loyal to each other. Jonathan took o his coat with which he was clothed and gave it to David, with the rest of his royal garments, even his sword and his bow and his girdle, as a sign of his undying friendship.
4. SAUL PERSECUTES DAVID
The next day Saul sat in his room in the pala e s usual, his mind lled with dark thoughts. D id David was summoned to play soothing music on his harp, but Saul would not so much as look at him.
