But there was no answer. They cried out and they leaped over the altar which they had made.
When it was noon, Elias jested with them and said, '' Cry with a louder voice, for he is a god, and perhaps he is talking, or is on a journey, or is asleep and must be awakened.'' They cried out louder and cut themĀ selves with their knives till they were covered with blood. But no answer came to their prayers.
Then Elias said to the people, ''Come to me now.'' And the people came near to him. He built an altar to the Lord with stones, and made a trench for water. He placed his bullock upon the wood, and had twelve buckets of water poured over the bullock. The water
ran round about the altar and lled the trench.
When it was time to o er the sacri ce, Elias came near and said, "0 Lord, God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Israel, show this day that Thou art the God of Israel, and that I am Thy servant, and that I have done these things according to Thy commands. Hear me, 0 Lord, hear me, that these people may know that
Thou art their God.''
Then the re of the Lord fell and consumed e G holocaust, and the wood, and the stones, and dried up s
on the water that was in the trench. And when all the El '
people saw this, they fell on their faces and cried: '' The Lord is God ! The Lord is God!''
Elias commanded the people to take the prophets of Baal to the Brook Cison, which ows at the foot of Mount Carmel. There Elias at God's command put them all to death.
