230 GOD'S CHOSEN PEOPLE UNDER KINGS
MOUNT CARMEL
When they met, Elias told him to gather together the Children of Israel before Mount Carmel. When they were assembled, Elias spoke to them, hoping to lead them back to the true God. He said to them, ''I am the only prophet of the Lord, but there are four hundred and fty prophets of Baal. Today we shall see whose God is the true God. Let two bullocks be given to us. The prophets of Baal shall choose one for themselves, cut it in pieces, and lay it upon wood, but put no re under it. I will dress the other bullock, put it upon wood, but put no re under it. The prophets shall call on the names of their gods, and I will call on the name of my Lord. The God that shall answer by re, let Him be God.'' The people were willing to
make the test of their god.
