the daughter of Herodias, danced before them. Herod was greatly pleased with her and promised on his oa  to give her whatever she should ask of him, even if it were half of his kingdom.
Salome asked permission to consult with her mother. Now Herodias hated John the Baptist, because he had publicly condemned her, so she told her daughter to ask for the head of John the Baptist on a dish.
Salome returned to the king, and said to him, ''Give me, on a dish, the head of John the Baptist.'' When Herod heard this, he was very sad. He knew that John was a holy man, for he had frequently visited him in prison. But because of the oath that he had made before all his guests, he ordered that John should be beheaded. The head was brought to him on a dish and he gave it to Salome, who took it to her mother. Thus was Herodias revenged. The disciples of John took the body of their master and buried it.
In the spring of the following year, Herod moved to his residence in Sepphoris, a town just west of Naz­ areth. All the people in that part of the eountry were talking about the teachings and the miracles of our Lord. Herod thought that Jesus might be John re­ turned to life. He was afraid of Him, and yet he was anxious to see the great Prophet. But his desire was not to be satis ed until the day on which our Lord died.
