At this time, Jesus had entered upon His public life. He had preached to the people and worked a number of miracles. From his prison, John sent two of his disciples to Jesus to ask Him whether or not He were the Messias. This he did, not because he himself doubted, but to prove to his disciples that Christ was the Savior for Whom they had been waiting.

When the disciples had gone their way, Jesus spoke about John to the multitude. He said to them, ''What went ye out into the desert to see-a reed shaken by the wind? But what went ye out to see-a man clothed in soft garments? Behold, they that are clothed in soft garments are in the houses of kings. But what went ye out to see-a prophet? Yea, I tell you, and more than a prophet. For this is he of whom it is written, 'Behold, I send My angel before Thy face, who shall prepare Thy way before Thee.' Amongst those that are born of women, there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist.''
