'HE REDEEMER AMONG MEN 357
He had come to heal the contrite of heart and to set at liberty those that were bruised.
All were delighted with the words which fell from His lips, and they said, "Is not this the son of Jo seph?'' But soon their delight was turned to anger. They expected Jesus to work miracles for them, as He had done in other parts of the country.
Jesus said to them, "Doubtless you will say to Me the proverb, 'Physician, heal thyself,' and say, 'The great things done in Capharnaum which we have heard spoken of, do the same in Thy native land.'' But, in truth, I say to you, a prophet is not held in honor in his own country. There were many widows in Israel at the time of Elias, when the heavens were closed dur ing three years and six months and there was a great famine over all the earth. And Elias was not sent to any one of them, but only to a widow woman of Sarephta. So, also, there were many lepers in Israel under the prophet Eliseus, and not one among them
was puri ed save only the Syrian, Naaman."
When the people heard this, they became very angry. ''Does He compare us, the sons of Abraham, th pagan women and lepersf'' they said and, rising up, they took hold of Jesus and dragged Him out of the city to a steep hill. They intended to throw Him over a precipice, but He freed Himself from their hands, and passed through the midst of them without harm. He left Nazareth and went to Capharnaum, another
city of Galilee.
The Messias had no xed pulpit, but He went among
the people and spoke to them wherever He found them.
