358 CHRIST PREPARES TO REDEEM THE WORLD
He taught in the  elds, in the streets of the town, in the courts of the Temple, and even from the boat of Simon Peter. One of His sermons is known as the Sermon on the Mount, because it was preached on the side of a small mountain or hill. We can imagine our Savior seated on a rock, part way up the slope of the hill, and the people gathered together below Him, some of them sitting on the ground, some of them standing up.
It was in this sermon that Jesus gave us the Eight Beatitudes. They contain the laws of the Kingdom of Heaven, which Christ came to establish on earth. Jesus said:
''Blessed are the poor in spirit; for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven. Blessed are the meek; for they shall possess the land. Blessed are they that mourn; for they shall be comĀ­ forted. Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after justice; for they shall have their  ll. Blessed are the merciful; for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the clean of heart; for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers; for they shall be called the children of God. Blessed are they that su er persecution for justice' sake; for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven. Blessed are ye when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and speak all that is evil against you, untruly, for My sake. Be glad nd rejoice, for your reward is very great in Heaven.''

From time to time, our Savior left the people and went alone to the solitude of some mountain to pray. Very often the Gospel tells us how He spent the whole night in prayer. From His example we learn how necessary it is for human beings to refresh and strengthen their souls by frequent conversations with
