THE PUBLICAN AND THE PHARISEE
To make His teaching clear to those who listened to Him, our Savior told them the following story:
''Two men went up to the Temple to pray. The one was a Pharisee, the other a publican. The Pharisee, standing, prayed, '0 God, I thank Thee that I am not like the rest of men-extortioners, unjust, adulterers -as is also this publican. I fast twice in a week, and I give Thee the tenth part of all that I possess.'
''But the publican stood afar o  and would not so much as lift up his eyes to Heaven. He struck his breast, saying, '0 God, be merciful to me, a sinner.' ''
