into this world.'' Then she hurried back to the house secretly and said to Mary, ''The Master is come, and calleth for thee.''
Jesus had not yet come into the town, but was stiil in the place where Martha had met Him. Rising up, Mary ran out to meet Him. When she came to where He was, she fell down at His feet and said, "Lord, if Thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.'' The heart of Jesus was deeply touched by the grief of Mary. The friends of Mary had followed her out of the house, because when she rose up so speedily and went out, they thought she was going to the grave. Now they saw her kneeling at the feet of Jesus and weeping, and they saw that Jesus, too, wept. "BeĀ­ hold,'' they said, ''how He loved him.''
Jesus asked, "Where have you laid him?" And they said to Him, ''Lord, come and see.''
As they were going toward the grave, some of the people said, "Could not He that opened the eyes of the man born blind have caused that this man should not die?''
Now they had come to the sepulcher. Like all the Jewish tombs of that day, it was a cave hewn out of a rock, and a stone was placed in front of it. Jesus said, ''Take away the stone.''
Martha said, ''But, Lord, by this time he stinketh, for he hath been buried four days.'' Jesus answered, "Did I not say to thee that if thou believe, thou shalt see the glory of God?"
So they took the stone away and Jesus, lifting up His eyes, prayed, ''Father, I give Thee thanks, for
