One group of people crossed the Isthmus of Suez and settled along the banks of the river Nile in north­ eastern Africa. The valley of the Nile was very fertile and promised to give them food in abundance. These people began to build cities, and after a time three large cities grew up: On, or Heliopolis, and Memphis in the north, and Thebes in the south. Each one of these cities controlled all the small villages and the count around it. Finally two kingdoms were formed: one in the north, with Memphis as its capital;
