THE GREAT FLOOD 23 3. THE NATIONS GROW AFTER THE FLOOD
After many years the human race grew larger and T larger, and the descendants of the sons of Noe were in T
need of richer elds and larger pasture lands. They moved to the elds of Sennaar and dwelt there. Then they said to one another, ''Let us make a city and a tower the top whereof may reach to heaven; and let us make our name famous before we be scattered abroad into all lands."
So they began to build the city and e tower. They baked the bricks, and hauled them higher and higher as the tower grew from day to day. But God saw what was in the hearts of the people. He knew that they were proud, and He decided to punish them.
One day while they were working on the tower, they noticed they could not understand one another very well. Little by little the language spoken by one family became entirely di erent from that of another. - They could work together no longer, so they ceased to
build the city and the tower.
The Lord scattered them from that place into all D ยท
lands. The city and tower were called Babel, which means confusion, because there the one language which the families of the ea h had used up to this time was changed into many di erent languages. Because of this, the families separated. The ve sons of Sem settled in Persia, Syria, Assyria, Chaldea, Asia Minor, and Mesopotamia. Japheth had seven sons, and these became the Scythians, Medes, Greeks, Thracians, etc.
