THE PASSION AND DEATH OF RIST 487
"'Know you not what I have done to youT" He said
to them. ''You call Me Master and Lord, and you say
well, for so I am. If then, I, being your Lord and
Master, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash
one another's feet. For I have given you an example,
that as I have done to you, so do you also. The serv ·i ant is not greater than his lord; neither is the apostle
greater than He that sent him."
They now proceeded to eat the Paschal lamb, as the T
law commanded. esus, as the head of the house, ex- plained the di erent ceremonies as they went along. While they were eating, esus became troubled in spirit and a great sadness came over Him. He said, ''Amen, amen, I say to you, one of you shall betray Me.'' Hearing this, the apostles were greatly shocked, and began to be sorrowful and to say to Him one by one, "Is it I, Lord¥" He answered, "The hand of him that betrayeth Me is with Me on the table. And the Son of Man indeed goeth, as it is written of Him; but woe to that man by whom the· Son of Man shall be betrayed. It were better for him had he never been
born."
All this time, udas had remained silent. Now he leaned forward and said, "Is it I, Rabbi 1" esus an swered him, in a low voice, so that the others could not hear, "Thou hast said it."
John, the disciple whom ,Jesus loved, leaned over and rested his head upon our Lord's bosom as if to comfort Him. Peter made a sign to him to ask esus of whom He was speaking. ohn whispered, "Lord, who is iU"
