488 CHRIST REDEEMS THE WORLD
In a low voice, Jesus answered, ''He it is to whom I shall reach bread dipped.''
Now there was an oblong dish on the table lled with a mixture of di erent kinds of fruit-apples and gs and citron-cooked in vinegar. The cinnamon and other spices used in its preparation gave it a reddish color, and it reminded the Jews of the bricks their forefathers had to make before God delivered them from Egypt. Into this dish Jesus dipped a morsel of bread and handed it to Judas, saying to him, "That which thou dost, do quickly.'' Only John understood what Jesus meant. The other apostles thought that Jesus meant that Judas should buy the things which they would need for the festival day, or that he should give something to the poor. When Judas had received the morsel from the hands of our blessed Savior he went out immediately, and it was night.
Then it was that Jesus took in His hand a piece of the unleavened bread which was part of the Paschal meal and, giving thanks to God, blessed it, broke it
and gave it to His apostles, saying, "TAKE YE AND EAT THIS IS MY BoDY." Then once more He took a large cup, or chalice, which was lled with wine, and, giving thanks, He passed it to them, saying, ''DRINK YE ALL OF THIS. FoR THIS Is My BLooD OF THE NEW TESTAMENT, WHICH SHALL BE SHED FOR MANY, UNTO REMISSION OF SINS.''
Now was ful lled the promise which Jesus had made in the synagogue at Capharnaum. He had given His apostles His esh to eat and His blood to drink. Then
