shall not be called Jacob, but Israel, which means Strong against God. Then he disappeared, and Jacob called the place Phanuel, saying, "I have seen God face to face and my soul hath been saved.''
The next day Jacob saw Esau coming in the distance. He ran forward and bowed down before him. But Esau was no longer angry, and, raising up his brother, he kissed him. Jacob o ered him as gifts great numĀ bers of sheep and other animals. At rst Esau was unwilling to accept them, but nally, to please Jacob, he took them.
After Esau had departed, Jacob crossed the Jordan and passed on to Salem, a city of the Sichemites. Here he bought land, for which he paid the price of one hundred lambs. At God's command he stayed for a time at Bethel, where he had seen the vision of the ladder. He built an altar and o ered sacri ce to God. Then he went to Bethlehem, where his youngest
