Create in 2D: Experiment with image and text to create a logo and pattern
For this design task, you are expected to design a logo, pattern and shopping bag for a store that
celebrates South African quirkiness and creativity. The store could sell anything of your choice- some
ideas include a boutique, a delicatessen, a hardware store or music store- the list is endless! You have
two lessons to complete this task. Complete the following process:
1. Decide on what kind of store you are going to brand and design for: ................................................
...........................................................................................................................................................
2. Decide on the name of your store: ....................................................................................................
3. Decide on a brand filter- a brand filter is four words that describe the personality as well as the look
and feel of your store. A brand filter helps designers to manipulate the visual language to suit the
company or product they are designing for. Your four words are: .....................................................
............................................................................................................................................................
4. Design the name of the store. Choose the font carefully to suit the personality and function of the
store. You may do this by hand or on the computer (remember to take screen shots to show that it
is your own work). Include the final design below:
5. Now you must design the logo. Remember what you have learnt so far about successful logos and
try to implement these characteristics in your own work. Follow these steps on the next page:
a) Collect images of South African things that inspire you or you feel define South Africa. Paste them
on the next page in an interesting way.
b) Complete 5 thumbnails (rough, quick sketches) of possible ideas for your final logo including some
of the ideas you found. Each one needs to be very different from the rest. Choose the best one.
c) Finalise your logo in colour.
6. Work through the design process developing your own pattern using the logo you have designed
as the motif for the pattern. It must be an original pattern- you may not copy any existing motifs or
patterns. You may simplify the logo for the pattern’s motif. You may also alternate the logo with
another design or shape. Use the collage technique to create the motif X 3 below:
