Create in 2D: Use simple printmaking techniques, varying the paper size
and detail, incorporating the art elements and design principles
For this task, you are expected to create a figurative representation of what is wrong with your world-
in order to communicate a social comment through your design. Your world could be big or small...
meaning that you could define your world as being Planet Earth or closer to home- your community,
school or even your group of friends, it could even be your household. The important thing is that you
know what you are talking about and show this in your work. A designer shouldn’t communicate about
issues that they don’t properly understand as their work will not be as powerful compared to a
designer who has lived through the experience, and has the scars and t-shirt to prove it! a large part
of the design process is research- finding out answers to the important questions.
You are going to be using the printmaking technique of lino cutting, scraperboard, potato prints or
collograph. Your teacher will inform you of which technique to use. Note the following in order to do
well in this task:
x You must use and manipulate the art elements and design principles to communicate your
message successfully. Your viewers need to understand your work and its message clearly!
x You need to make the viewer understand the situation and agree with you that something should
be done about this situation. Show the viewer, teach them, move them emotionally so that they
want to do something about the problem that is occurring in your world.
x Choose an interesting and original focus area. Don’t choose a common and clichéd topic. Think
of an idea that is different to everyone else... or choose a clichéd, common idea and then do it
very different so that people stop and relook at the situation, as you have shown them a new side
of the problem.
x Many of you will not have used the printmaking techniques before. Not to worry!!! Follow the
instructions carefully and try your best. You will master the techniques with practice.
x You are going to be working on different sized paper. Some people get nervous and feel insecure
when faced with a bigger piece of paper. Don’t fall into this trap- rather see the bigger sized
paper as an opportunity to work freely, express yourself and challenge yourself to approach it
with curiosity rather than with the dreaded “fear of the big white space” approach.
It is important that you think about what you are going to do carefully and critically. You will be
developing the idea for your final print in different stages. Your final print must be at least A4 size.
Complete the following:
1) Carefully answer the questions that follow
2) Collect actual images or examples of the idea you have chosen to do and paste them on the
page provided – comment on them
3) Include rough sketches of your ideas and designs – explain them
4) Complete an A4 drawing of your final design as a wax resist and paste it in the space
provided. Remember to consider the art elements as well as the design principles to create a
successful composition that has visual impact.
