           A Foundation of Caring

Women Golfers Raise 50K for Cancer Care

It’s not every day a group of
golfers raise over $50K for their
           community, but a local Women’s
           Golf Association is not your
           “every day” group.

“I knew they were great on
           the green, but these women
           are truly amazing!” says Helen
           Taylor, Executive Director of the
           WhidbeyHealth Foundation.
           The Useless Bay Country Club
golf group set a new fundraising
           record with their annual “Cancer
           Awareness Week,” of events
           having raised more than $50,000
           to support oncology services at
WhidbeyHealth. Pictured from left to right are: Ako Shimozato, Helen Taylor, Nancy McClain, Sharon Sanford,

“Every year, this event grows Vadset, Christie Karvasek and Leslie Dana.
to serve more and more people
needing cancer care here on the island and these golfers go above and beyond,” adds Taylor.
In addition to the tournament, luncheon and auctions, this year’s committee added activities for an entire week of fundraising.
This included games at the men’s tournament and a Saturday night sock hop that was enjoyed by more than 150 Useless Bay
Country Club members and their guests.

This dynamic group decided to make support of local cancer care their focus five years ago. The first tournament raised
$7,300, making it possible for WhidbeyHealth to purchase patient-wellness navigation software. Since then, the total amount
raised tops $125,000. The recent funds will be used to purchase cooling technology that helps chemotherapy patients prevent
hair loss during treatment. Taylor notes that the passion and enthusiasm of these women has created the momentum that we
           see today.
“Everyone has a cause that is meaningful to them,” says sock hop chair Nancy McClain. “Access to excellent healthcare here
           on the island is something we believe is extremely important, so we created these events for that purpose. I recommend it;
find something you enjoy and just get started!”
