258: EMISSION OF SEMEN
BY A BACHELOR WITH
KIDNEY DISEASE WHO
IS CONCERNED ABOUT
INFERTILITY
ɳ Question
A young man in his early twenties suffers from progressive kidney
disease. The deterioration in his kidney function has damaged var-
ious organs and in consequence, he may become sterile. At present
there is no specific treatment for such sterility and the only way to
ensure that the patient will have offspring should he marry is to freeze
semen that will be taken from him now, when it is still of sufficient
quality and quantity.
My question is – is he permitted to emit semen at present, while
it is uncertain at what point prior to his marriage his condition will
worsen to the point of sterility?

cialist in Kidney and Blood Vessel
Disease, Petach Tikvah
ɳ Response
The view of my father-in-law, Rav Y.S. Elyashiv zt”l, is to forbid this
and I shall explain his opinion:
