PRESIDENTS FOREWORD

What a pleasure it is to welcome everyone to the Northern Athletics Cross-Country
Championships for 2019 here on Pontefract Racecourse.
Just like most courses that are available to host these events, it is a challenge for
competitors and spectators alike to handle the conditions with which we are pre-
sented. A warm sunny day is a rarity at this time of year so I hope you are wrapped up
well!
My first introduction to these Championships, as an Under15, found me with one
plimsoll stuck in mud shortly after the start. Sensible thing being to put it back on, and
hope to catch the rest. I didn’t, but perseverance saw me finish and I don’t ever
remember dropping out of a race. Cross-country running certainly develops that
tenacity.
I am sure most of you realise the amount of hard work that goes on in the many weeks
and days before today to ensure the smooth running of this event. So many people to
thank, and it goes without saying how grateful Northern Athletics are for their unstinting
support. The continued sponsorship of Start Fitness has also added much to the
success of the day over the past few years.
It is left for me to wish you all an enjoyable afternoon’s entertainment, Competitors,
Spectators and Officials alike.
Keep smiling, even if things don’t go your way!
