Mary, Mother of Mercy was formed in 2016
through the merger of St. Francis Solanus in Interlaken, Holy Cross in Ovid and St. James the Apostle in Trumansburg.
All three parishes had been served by Capuchin Franciscans from the Province of Mary for
several decades.
In 1849 Father Michael Gilbride organized the Catholics in Ovid into a congregation with regular Masses held in homes, a saloon, a shop and a
courthouse until the construction of Holy Cross Church was complete. The clapboard structure was dedicated by Bishop John Timon of the Diocese of Buffalo in 1851. In 1895 the parish began construction of a brick church, which remains in use today and has been renovated at least three times.
