In Trumansburg, meanwhile, Father William Gleason purchased a former Methodist church in 1854 and began to renovate it. Three years later, the completed building was dedicated as the new St. James the Apostle Church. In 1896 the church building was moved, enlarged and rededicated by Bishop Bernard J. McQuaid. The congregation was
a mission of an Ithaca parish until 1872, when it became an independent parish with Father Gilbert Nuonno as its rst resident pastor. In 1949 much of the church was destroyed by re, but it was rebuilt, dedicated in 1950 by Bishop James E. Kearney and is still in use today.Capuchin Franciscans.
