St. John’s was founded in 1840 with Father John Stewart as pastor. In 1851 the parish built a small wooden church. In the spring of 1869 Bishop McQuaid laid the cornerstone for the current church, and by Christmas Day enough of the construction had been nished that parishioners were able to attend Mass there. The completed building was dedicated in 1870. The bell tower was completed in 1901.
